Over the weekend, many Amazon customers have received fake "official" emails from the company confirming gift card purchases they never made.
Many complained on social media that they received three consecutive "thank you" emails for purchases of Google Play, Mastercard, and Hotels.com gift cards
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the emails were sent out due to an error in their system. Follow-up apology emails are being sent to them.
The email was more alarming because it also contained a paragraph warning customers about potential gift card scams from popular brands.
Customers worried that hackers might have purchased the gift cards on their behalf by accessing their financial information.
They also had to wait longer than usual to speak to an Amazon customer service representative as many had similar complaints.
However, another Amazon customer service representative reassured customers that accounts were safe and that they could ignore the emails.
Customers who may have received these emails don't have to do anything further.
