The average American has 3.84 (let’s call it 4) credit cards, according to Experian data. The average person holds a $5,315 balance with an average $30,365 credit limit.
This is just over the advice experts give to have two or three cards. One with a low-interest rate for emergency use, one that earns you rewards on everyday purchases, and one with specific rewards like travel benefits or higher cashback.
As you might expect, people tend to get more credit cards with age. The average Gen Z person (18-23 years old) had about two cards and the average Baby Boomer (56-74 years old) had nearly five cards.
