The average American credit score varies. Credit scores, even the national or state averages, vary based on which scoring model is used, the credit scoring agency, or the lender that is requesting them. Averages vary based on other factors such as age, state, and occupation, too. According to Experian® data, the average national FICO® Score in the U.S. was 714 in 2022. It has remained unchanged since 2021 even though economic conditions were not steady in 2022.
By generation, people over 77 years of age have an average FICO Score of 760; ages 58-76 have 742; ages 42-57 have 705; ages 26-41 have 687, and the youngest population over 18-25 years of age have 679. VantageScore® for the same may differ. The average national VantageScore is 701. Even across generations and states, the FICO scores remained mostly unchanged.
