There are two kinds of credit inquiries: a soft inquiry and a hard inquiry. Soft inquiries usually don’t have any impact on your credit score. The purpose of a soft inquiry is usually to check your score or get a general background check from employers. This does not affect your credit score.

A hard inquiry occurs when a new credit account is opened or a credit report is pulled from bureaus by lenders. This temporarily causes a drop in your score.
