Here’s a list of card issuers known for offering rental car insurance. For the most part, you’ll need a good to excellent credit score to qualify for one of these cards.
And remember, offers change, so you’ll want to double-check if a card has this benefit before relying on it:
Chase®: Chase is well-known for offering primary rental car insurance on many of its cards, especially travel-related ones. Notable examples include the Chase Sapphire Preferred® and Chase Sapphire Reserve®.
United℠ Explorer Card: Another Chase card, this card offers primary coverage specifically geared towards rentals for travel.
The Platinum Card® from American Express®: While many AmEx cards offer secondary rental insurance, with this premium card, you can receive primary coverage if you enroll in the Premium Car Rental Protection program offered by American Express.
Capital One®: Select Capital One cards offer primary rental insurance, but the availability and extent of coverage can vary, so it’s important to review the specifics for each card.
Certain Citi® Cards: While Citi has scaled back some of its card benefits, there are still a few cards in their lineup that offer primary rental car insurance. It’s worth checking the current benefits of your Citi card.
FYI — When you use a credit card that offers primary rental car insurance, you typically need to decline the rental company’s insurance and pay for the rental entirely with that card. The coverage often includes damage due to collision or theft but read the terms carefully, since there may be restrictions and exclusions.
Also, keep in mind that liability insurance, which covers damage to other vehicles or property as well as injuries to other people, is not included, so you may still need additional coverage for complete protection.
