Credit cards started to become popular in the 1950s when the Diners Club Card was introduced.

Legend has it that its creator had the idea after embarrassingly not having enough cash on him to pay for his dinner. The Diner’s Card started in restaurants but expanded to other businesses like hotels and car rentals. Unlike modern-day credit cards, you couldn’t carry a balance on the Diner’s Card, instead, it had to be paid off each month.

Later the companies now known as Visa and Mastercard introduced the modern day card, allowing people to hold a balance month over month. As more establishments agreed to accept them, credit cards became popular because they made spending more flexible and were a convenient way to make purchases without having to carry a ton of cash.
