Tax day or the deadline for filing your income tax returns is April 15, 2024. People living in Maine and Massachusetts have until April 17, 2024, because of state holidays. You could request a six-month extension to file your tax returns (not pay your taxes, which should still be done by April 15) with Form 486B in which case your new deadline would be October 15, 2024. Different state income taxes are due on different dates.
You could file your taxes at the last minute and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) would consider it on time if the paper was properly addressed, had enough postage, and postmark, and was in the mail by the due date. If you’re filing online, your local time zone is considered.
