The period between January 1 and April 15 when most taxpayers prepare to file their state and federal taxes is known as tax season. While one does not need three months to file taxes, this period is to help taxpayers get everything in order, especially employers, banks, and financial service providers who can give relevant information to their clients and other individual taxpayers. April 15 is tax day. If that day falls on a weekend, however, the deadline is pushed to the following Monday.
Employers need to send W-2 forms to their employees by January 31. Independent contractors get their Form 1099-NFC. Filing early helps as your return is processed early and you get your refund sooner than most. You can avoid the last-minute rush when most other taxpayers also file their returns.
